The wet clutch Pantah were introduced much more late with the small block 600 and later 750 and so on.
I agree with Jon: no Paso has a wet clutch.
Perhaps a later 750 engine could be fitted on that Paso.

It appears to be a 750 ( engine serial starts with ZDM748 A2C).Definately a wet clutch motor. Sorry I haven't gotten pics up yet. I'm still trying to clean up all the grime. From what I see it looks like a straight bolt in. No odd brackets , spacers ,etc.

It may also be from a Cagiva Elefant. You won`t find any brackets or so as the engines will fit with 2 modifications, one being a larger threadhole at the front cylinder as the Paso frame uses a bigger bolt.
The other thing that needs to be modified is the rear of the engine. The Paso swingarm has a narrower mount so material has to be machined from an SS/Elefant/Monster engine to fit the Paso swingarm.

I called my buddy that has a 650 Elefant. It also has a dry clutch so I don't have any idea where your wet clutch engine came from but it must be an early 90's engine? Pics would help, grime or not.

The Cagiva Elefant 750 type 6N had a dry clutch while the 750 AC type 6B (mid 90s) hat a wet clutch.

Sounds like there is a lot of interest in your new bike! Congratulations on your new (old) Ducati!

The 1991 750SS bikes had crankcases with the narrower swingarm mounting (I have one in the shed). The aluminium swingarm had adaptors to fit the narrower crankcases. Only the first 1000 or so in 1991 had the Dry clutch of the 750 Paso, but in 1992 they went to a wet clutch. Maybe this engine is one of the crossover models in between the 1991 and 1992 specification?

Also, it is possible to fit a dry clutch from a 750 Paso to a later 750SS or 600SS wet clutch bike, so why not vice versa. You just have to change the primary gears and gearbox out as well. Note that the input shaft is 10mm longer on the dry clutch bike (trust me). Change the side cover and clutch etc of course. I'm running a Dry 750 Paso clutch setup on my much modified 600SS engine (which originally had a wet clutch).

A photo would probably clear up any confusion

Sometimes mechanics used to working on modern ducati's can get confused...they look for the clutch slave cylinder mounted on the left hand side of the bike as for the modern dry clutch, don't see it, and conclude it is a wet clutch. Some don't realise some bikes with the clutch slave cylinder in the right hand side cover are actually dry clutches. It has happened to me, so maybe possible here?

It sounds like someone has looked after the bike or at least fixed up problems properly. Any other unexpected upgrades I wonder?

Indeed - clearly a wet clutch

I reckon you may have an early 750SS engine there (with the narrow crankcases at the swingarm so it fits without machining). I checked my 1991 750SS engine which has these early type crankcases (but which has a dry clutch, from before they switched to the wet clutch of the 600SS). My engine number starts the same as yours (ZDM748 A2C) and is a number less than 350.

M750 Monster engine numbers were the same but they all had wet clutches(?) and wider crankcases at the pivot (used the 851 swingarm I think?)

Strange mix of side covers though. Older alternator cover than on my 1991 750SS engine but a newer style the same as my 1994 600SS on the clutch side!

It is a bit of "odd duck" . engine serial number is in the 4000's. I transferred ownership yesterday and we have to get a "vehicle info package". It has 2 registered previous owners in this province. I'm going to try and contact them to see if they have any knowledge of the mods. I'll keep you posted.

Based on the production numbers in Ian Fallons books, assuming no other models than the 750SS and M750 used the ZDM748A2C prefix (no aware of any - someone else might know?), then that puts that engine somewhere late in the 1992 production year I think?

Engine have changed later surely. Fairings have those "controlled air flow" stickers and silver colour upper triple clamp, so your bike is very early one 750 Paso(no matter it dont have Öhlins, but Marzhocci in rear) and THAT time Ducati factory didnt think YET any 2 spark normal production engines as such came VERY many years later. Engine seems to be some mix from later SS/Monster engine as it have silver colour cases. They use silver colour cases in 90's in SS at least. I have one such 750 SS engine from 1997 but my engine have silver colousr clutch and alternator covers. I quees, Your engine is rebuild from many Ducati engines...

They say BOS on them .Never heard of them. I've been able to contact a previous owner. hopefully he'll shed some light on the history of the bike.
