Post subject: Problems with starting motorcycle RUN/STOP switch
PostPosted: Wed Aug 27, 2008 2:02 am
Hello,
I have been having problems with starting my motorcycle. It doesn't matter if it is cool or hot. I can push start the bike with no issues, BUT when I hit the start button I get nothing. I found that if I toggle the RUN/STOP switch it will turn over and start. Of course, you have to be on the RUN selection when you stop toggling. I also found that when the weather was hot the motorcycle will sometimes just cut out. Not a motor issue but I think it is an electrical problem. By no means am I a mechanic so these are the steps I have taken to see if they may fix the problem.

1. Charged the battery and cleaned the terminals - didn't help
2. Changed the fuses - didn't help
3. Took the toggle RUN switch apart and cleaned it. I found hardly any dirt and wear - didn't help
4. I changed the spark plugs - didn't help

The bike does have Japanese electrics (Kokusan). If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be very helpful. I just don't want to be riding and have the bike just quit.
Thanks,
LT

Make a voltage control on the orange wire on the coils pin while you're starting the engine. you need at least 11v to make coils run.
Whether the kill switch works good and has no impedance (measure this after the plug to the main harness), you should clean the main switch, see the 750paso/faq digest to find the instructions
Have a nice work, and

do you have to crank with kill switch on OFF position and the bike starts when you switch to ON ?
Try to start the engine keeping the Kill switch on ON position. Remove the seat first and if the engine cranks without firing up try to slap the starter solenoid with your flat hand. Try that a few times. If that works change the starter solenoid or try to rebuild it (see download section for instructions). Seems this problem is quite common.

PS: the Toshiba switch from newer Ducs seems more reliable but requires some sort of selfmade mounting bracket as it doesn`t have one.

You have a voltage drop to the starter solenoid. Take a look at the FAQ for the wiring upgrade thread. It will fix your problem. I guarantee it!

the wiring upgrade is a really good thing, but in my opinion should be done only after cleaning all contacts, switches etc and making sure the rest of the electrics is ok. It doesn`t solve problems it makes things work by bypassing them. Specially if the regulator/rectifier is not ok and puts out 16V and more at high rpm as mine did once the wiring upgrade could put at least your coils at risk as w/o the voltage drop you will have that voltage also at your coils. Similar thing if you do the relais mod to the headlight.
Still something I would recommend to everyone.
Just wanted to say this.

750 Paso need wiring upgrade with some realys more to function well, but all those are easy to do and 750 Paso have space allaround to put some realys there. One of biggest problems is too small wire diameters in harness and only way to fix that is to put some bigger wires and add some realys to system.... I want to say, that 750 Paso needs 4 extra relays:

one main relay
one for coils
one for low beams
one for high beams

... since those, ill have been happy!

Ok, i forget better starting relay from newer Ducatis (Hitachi unit)... its "MUST thing"

But if guys want to suffer in they lifes, then no need any mods..... Somebody want to keep also they bikes, as "original", but in 750 Pasos case, i think, its stupid to try keep it, like it came from factory...

Sorry my bad english!

Ducatis are made for HARD DRIVING in twisty road, (or race tracks surely) !!!!!! Or have i understood "Ducati ideology" totally wrongly? :)
