Post subject:  Fuel gauge gone crazy

Ive been putting my bike back together after a wreck. I noticed when I move the bike around that the fuel gauge needle moves a lot with every move. When the power is off and the tank is full, turn the key on and the needle shoots to the top. I opened the tank and checked for anything floating but all is good. When I move the float up and down the needle responds exactly, no delay. It didn't use to be this way. There should be a damping in the reaction of the needle. It should not respond so quickly. Should there not be a resistor that dampens out the motion of the float?
Ideas?

It is the same on my 907

It would not work with a Resistor, it would show less fuel but the needle moves like before. A Capacitor would reduce any quick movement

Guys you miss the point. Check back on the old topics, there are many discussions on the fuel gauge. So, change the mind set and rejoice that you have a very sensitive measuring device that faithfully shows the ever changing fuel level inyour tank. Even over every bump and hill.
Cheers,

Fraser

Fraser,
My point in all this is that I don't remember the guage acting this way before my accident. The bike sat for a year before I started riding it again a couple of weeks ago. I just never noticed the needle being so reactive. Don't get me wrong, it would move if I took off real fast, stopped real fast, going up or down hills, just not so fast (the needle movement) and never while just sitting in the driveway and rocking the bike back and forth. But, it does NOW! And with a full tank of gas, start the engine and the needle would come up to full gradually, now it rockets to the top, swish!

The fuel gauge is indeed more stable in the reading on my 907 ie and does not move up and down on every bump or corner. Even the low fuel light is quit dampend in indicating I need to find a fuelingstation.

To my opinion there must be a difference in the measuring or processing of the fuel level in the 907 ie compared to previous models. AS mine is manufactured in 1992, it could be one of the last modifications made much to my liking..

So I think your perception that "something" has changed is indeed correct. Only have no clue what that would be.

hi Du907,

as you stated, you're 907 is recovered from a wreck, the bike had probably a severe shock.
I don't think this blow damaged your fuel level measurement device inside the tank, but damaged a dampening mechanism in the gauge it selve.
if you have access to an other dash with proven functionality you could check this.

As you`ve disassembled and rebuilt the complete front end I wonder if the wires to the fuel sender are all connected and connected correctly or if it`s a bad or missing ground connection somewhere.
