Post subject:  Expansion Tank

Hi Folks, I bought a 1990 906 Paso in August and after riding it home discovered the small nipple broke off the expansion tank. I've read the various threads in the forum about solutions and sourcing options. May I ask if anyone presently knows of one for sale? I've been checking ebay. Also, was hoping someone might be able to confirm the Aprilia Pegaso's tank will work? Finally, if you know of someone who can fabricate an aluminum one that would be appreciated as well. I live in Hoboken, NJ. Hope everyone has a nice day. Thanks very much. Daryl

Hi Francesco,

Thanks very much for your information. I will follow your advice and hopefully someone else will have a suggestion as well. Am getting the feeling following multiple approaches in parallel will be required. Have a happy day. Daryl

Fitting a different tank is the cheapest way to fix the bike, too.
An aluminum tank will cost to you a fortune, besides you can't check the level of the water inside!

Very good points Francesco. The Paso overflow tank has a small diameter nipple/hose and a larger diameter nipple and hose. It doesn't seem like all expansion tanks have this configuration. Will have to find out how important it is to maintain. My understanding is this is a pressurized system. Currently the tank is sitting at a Ducati dealer/repair shop along with the bike. I'll be speaking with them today.

In addition am looking at the possibility of using the following product recommended on this site to glue the smaller nipple back in place.

http://www.tapecase.com/p.27.7/3m-scotc ... p8010.aspx

The temperature at which this adhesive looses it's integrity is 224 degrees F. So, I have another question for the dealer. How hot does the fluid/spray get in the coolant bottle?

As you say the best option is finding a replacement bottle. Am out of town for a week, will have to pursure that when I get back. My challenge is being green (sold sports car & truck 2.5 years ago in preparation for moving to the NYC area) I don't have a car. Hence the recent motorcycle purchase. Will probably fix the bike and sell it for something easier to maintain. I will consider a New Ducati as well unless it turns out they aren't relatively easy to maintain. Had a 1990 Porsche 911 for 15 years so am familiar with paying a bit more to keep a nice vehicle in great shape. Have to draw the line though when parts aren't readily available. This 1990 Paso purchase is an example of what can happen when one doesn't do the research. I paid $2,100 for it which was low enough for me to let my guard down. At the time i didn't consider the availability of parts. Dough! (grin). It will work out though and someone will get a nice 1990 Ducati Paso.

Thanks, Daryl

Post subject:  Re: Expansion Tank

Hi Folks,

I called 3M tech and they recommended DP-8005 as an industrial strength adhesive that would be appropriate for this application. They said they preferred it over both the DP805 & DP8010 for Polyurethane. Although it's expensive i've decided to go with it via the 3M recommended distributor "Rsuse" (877.774.8443). The cost will be as follows:
adhesive (black) - $23.59
10/1 exp applicator - $58.49
gold colored (short) nozzels - $1.75 each.

Am hoping to have these products shipped to the Ducati Dealer and have them apply the solution. Since I don't have a car to search for an alternative bottle this is the most pragmatic approach. Will keep you apprised. Thanks much, Daryl

Good luck       .
I can tell you that my bottle was fixed by the previous owner of my bike with the fiberglass. It isn't too much smart to see, but it works.
It also seems those 3M adhesives work very well. I'm pretty sure you will be able to fix the tank.
No matter, you're really fearless to have an old Paso as only vehicle...

Thanks for your encouragement and humor Francesco. We've put the order in and have requested shipment to the Ducati Repair shop. In addition to the components listed above a $12.00 Plunger was also required. Joe, over at the shop said he would apply the adhesive from both outside and inside as well as sand it (outside). That was encouraging to hear. After this repair is made they will continue their diagnostics for the overheating. Hopefully there are no remaining issues. The thought of riding the bike home with no known issues is a happy one. Ciao for now, Daryl

Hi Folks,

The 3M adhesive described above worked and after 8 weeks of looking for/implementing a solution I have the bike back in good working order. The repair shop also had to replace the thermostat. Since the thrmostates aren't made anymore the repair shop found the S4 thermostat was a match. (it might have been an S3, sorry). In any case, there was some more work to be done to find hoses where the bends lined up, sort of. In the end they did get it to work. Thanks, Daryl

Is that Country Joe you're referring to??

The local Duc club has a few members in Hoboken ( Hobroken :-) ) and some of us actually ride Pasos!

www.desmoducati.org is where to find us.

Very happy to see that you got the tank sorted out. Thanks for posting the info as well. The 906 is a solid bike once you get the bugs worked out and the 2 valve lump is really dependable. The only part that isn't availbale is that res tank. Everything else can be sourced but many of the shops are NEW to Ducati and have very little experience with models like the Paso. When you need parts, you need to call aroun to the old time dealers. You never know what what they have. If you watch ebay, make a search for 906 parts and get the emails when parts are listed. A tank might show up and you can get it for insurance. ECS in Middletown, NY is a really good independant Duc shop with 2 very ecperienced Duc techs running it.

Hi Jon,

Thanks very much for your reply. Yes, you are absolutely right, referring to "Country Joe". We'll I've done a terrible thing. I traded in the ole Paso this evening for a new 2008 Triumph Speed Tripple.

http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/photos/2 ... Triple.htm

The tank and fenders are white with most of the bike being matte black. Since Jenny and I don't have a car we needed a reliable daily driver. Country Joe recommended i sell the 906 based on our needs and I took him up on it.

I bought it from the Ducati/Triumph/KTM dealership in Manhattan based on its proximity and good experiences there in the past. If you don't mind riding with a Triumph man please drop me a line at dsg911@yahoo.com. Am definatley looking for riding buddies. Ciao for now,
Daryl
PS. I had purchased a 906 workshop manual on CD. Let me know if you know someone who would like to have it.

Pity you have bought the manual.
You could have downloaded here for free.

I hope you'll find many good riding buddies.
I'm a little bit far away and am a very bad rider.
Ciao

Hi Francesco,

You are a good man and it was great chatting with you. I just "putt" around so you would have been a great riding buddy for me. Thanks for your good wishes. All the best to you and your family.

Ciao,

Daryl
