OK, so I have a 96 900SS/SP, that I would like to slowly turn into a pseudo naked 750 Sport (maybe a bit of Monster too!) and was wondering about wheels.

Would the Sport/Paso wheels fit? I don't know bearing or spacer sizes.

And I realize tires are a problem, but wouldn't the bigger Avon for the rear fit my bike?

I dunno, just some thoughts.

Brian,
The rear wheel will fit right into your swingarm. you will need the entire rear wheel assembly, including rotor, caliper and caliper hanger. Easy as changing a tire.

The front gets more complicated as the rotors are different sizes and the mounting pattern for the rotors is different.

Cheers, Phil

Forks/yokes are not a straight swap. Different stem dia., Showa is 26mm, Marzocchi is 25mm. The steering tube dia. is different too, SS is 52mm so you will need to source 52x25x15 headstock bearings or change steering stems and bore out the top yoke. Offset is probably different too. That will alter trail, and might give you steering lock issues. I would't put 16" wheels on your 96 SS if I were you. The above dimensions are assuming 750Sport headstock/yoke size is the same as 907

even though the idea of a downgrade is a bit silly I like it  You definetely won`t get a handling or brake performance improvement by doing this.
The rear 16" wheel will only fit if it is from a 750 Sport not if it is from a 750 or 906 Paso. The rims are identical but the rear axles aren`t (17mm Sport/ 20mm Paso) so the bearing spacers in the rim and also in the sprocket carrier are not the same.
As Phil said you`ll need the rear brake assembly too as the SS has a 245mm disc and the S a 270mm.
Calipers are not interchangeable due to different mounting hole distances.
Tires are not a problem and a wide one would also fit in the Sport swingarm.
Even if no spacers are needed to center the rear wheel my guess is the chain could be out of line as the front sprockets are not the same and the engine case neither due to a 5 speed gearbox in the S vs a 6 speed in the SS.

The front wheel would require new spacers and another problem you`ll run into is the speedometer drive. The wheel bearings and bearing spacers would be ok if the SS front axle is 17mm. The mounting points for the calipers on the SS are for 320mm discs while the S uses 280mm so this won`t work and there are no 320mm discs that fit the 16" rims unless you have some made. (I always wondered if one could make an adapter ring and use i.e. the ones of a Multistrada)

no, that`s why a 17" conversion was always easier on a Sport than on a Paso. ;)
I have a black/silver set of rims for my Paso and another red/silver that came from a Sport. I only discovered the difference myself when I noticed that one set fitted in a 907ie swingarm (17mm axle like many other 90s Ducs) and the others didn`t.

Related question, can the Avon Cobras be used on these wheels? I was on Avons website but they do not list whether the tires are bias or radial.

Brian,
If you want a set of Sport wheels, complete with rotors and calipers, and the complete front end, let me know. I am taking them off of my next project bike and putting on a set of wire wheels from a Sport Classic. (adapting 25mm bearings to a 17mm axles)
Where are you located?

Cheers, Phil

Have you used them yet? I have had Avons in the past and been very happy with them. I don't see any reason why they would be any different.

That`s a 180/60-16 Cobra and 130/70-16 Azaro ST45.
Haven`t ridden the Cobra yet, but the Azaro and others and was quite happy with them so far.
Handling and wear are always a difficult subject to discuss as these can differ a lot depending on riding style, bike model or individual setup.
