Post subject: Help? Sell as Bike or Parts? Posted: Tue Mar 14, 2006 11:39 pm |

Hello, my name is Chandra Thompson, and I own a 1987 Ducati 750 Paso, and unfortunately I must sell it. I am trying to decide if I should sell the motorcycle to someone, or break it up into parts. Is there more interest in the whole motorcycle, or as parts? Please let me know what everyone thinks.

I'm assuming the bike doesn't need major work?
In theory you can get more money selling it off bit by bit. In reality, this only works if you can find buyers for the higher priced parts. But in the mean time you hvae to tear the bike down, store the unsold bits, ship the sold parts, and try to keep everyone happy when they ask for a complete widget assy and you don't send the bracket that the widget attaches to...
There is also a philosophical aspect of breaking up a perfectly good bike just to make more money. Granted the parts go to keep other bikes running, but there are still people who will think you are evil for ruining a Ducati.
Your choice, but I'd say sell it as a whole bike. No, you might not make as much money, but it will all be done in one deal and you won't have to do nearly as much work.
Then again, I'm biased. I'm just finishing up the rebuild of a '74 Ducati that probably should have been broken up for parts - it cost more to fix than it's worth, and the guy who sold it to me easily could have made more selling it in parts, but he wanted to see it rebuilt, and I wanted a project, so there ya go.

For me... I have an '87 that's in need of some minor repair. I've often thought of buying a 2nd and just keeping it for parts. Taking the best of the two and making one really nice. Using the leftovers on an as-needed basis. Can you send me picts and what you'd expect to get for it whole?
Anyway, it is your call, but if it's running, I'd say sell 'er as is. If it is not running or in need of some major work, part it out. But that's just MHO.
