dear all i was shocked when I saw these prictures in a german speaking forum regarding the supersport models from 91-97: http://www.duc-forum.de/thread.php?threadid=58981 With the supersport models from that time period, it seems to be quite common ....... and it must be really dangerous. I had a deeper look at my Paso => the swingarm ist aluminum too, but look different => I could not see any problems here. Now my question: Did anyone of you had to deal with a crack in the swingarm with the Paso so far? Thank you and keep on riding, Hardo |

Cracks in SS swing arms were because of the pinch bolt arrangement, mostly. Easily overtightened and the casting broke right next to where it was welded to the stamping and the extrusion. Not a good design. Cheers, Phil |

I can`t remember one topic about cracks on a Paso swingarm. That`s tyical for the Sport and SS models, secially the alloy swingarms. What`s been covered so far about welding Paso swingarms was damage due to loose sprocket bolts or incorrectly mounted wheel spacer on the 907. G. |

i'm going to stick my neck out here and say that I think that it is unusual to see a crack in that location - I think there's a chance that was possibly due to some aftermarket welding following an accident as it's also rare to normally see a blowhole/void in a welding run like that. The early 'wrong side of the pivot' pinchbolt arrangement failures (as mentioned) are well documented on the other hand. EDIT I suppose I ought to add for the benefit of Gerhard at least, that i'm still a Paso virgin but apart from talking to many early SS owners and looking at their bikes, I have had 4 SS with early aluminium swinging arms (still have 2) and have run them for a few thousand miles (I didn't count). I have seen a few fractures next to the front pivots and one of mine had a new arm under warranty for same reason before I owned it but yet to see any cracks or repairs to the rear. The most common fault with that area is the rather long but small diameter hex head screw on the chain adjuster. These should be replaced whenever they are distorted or have corroded/damaged threads as they are prone to binding and seizing in the aluminium tapped holes sometimes resulting in a major repair. |
