Post subject:  750 Paso or 750ss?

As a former Ducati 900 ss owner I've have ridden a BMW R1200RT for this last 5 years which is a brilliant all rounder and a real keeper. Now I am looking to add something older to the RT to potter on with and ride on sunny days. I was thinking of a BMW R100RS which is one of my all-time favourites ( have had three of them over the years) but to be honest I still don't have the ducat bug out of my system. I keep looking at 750/900 ss again but whenever I see a Paso there is just something about them that catches my attention. So that is the question. 750 Paso or 750/900 ss??? ( have around £1500 to spend so don't think I can stretch to a 907). Am I going mad at even considering a Paso?. Would love to have anyones thoughts!

Graeme

Welcome Graemer,
they are quite different.
The Pasos are sport tourer bikes while SS are sport bikes, lighter, lower handbars etc.
Besides, if you can't afford the price of a 907, you have to know you'll have some trouble with the 16" tires which are no longer available.
Of course, all depends by your tastes, but the SS are a more modern bikes compared to the Paso series even if the engine is the same, except for the carburettors.
No matter, I would never change a Paso for a SS
Let us know about your purchase           .

Ciao

If have to choose 750 Paso, or 900 SS, i would choose surely 900 SS.... I mean, 92-97 900SS, not any 89, or 90 SS ....But if thinking 907IE, or 90's 900SS, then i would choose 907IE surely. As Frankie stated, SS have more difficult driving position, but it is not so heavy compared to 907IE. 750 Paso is lighter, but have quite lot of "problems", what can be cured surely, but it take time and little money... :smoke:

But 750 SS is nothing to me......

Im thinkin' Who cares as long as you get a duke  I have had both a paso and a SS and the paso is a bit better suited to longer rides althought the SS aint that bad . SS has better sports abilities. If you can get either for the same money I would take a SS over the paso ONLY because it gets you round the 16 inch wheel issue. There is definatly something horney about the paso you wont see on another bike tho :)

Graeme,

take the Paso. You`ll regret taking the SS. The basic differences were already explained. I personally don`t like the sitting position on the SS. The Paso is more comfortable and better looking. You`ll love it everytime you open the garage.
The bike has no issues just character and even if original tires don`t exist anymore meanwhile there are alternatives and for some you don`t even have to modify the bike other than taking a longer chain and lifting the front fender.
If you go for a Paso you may consider one with a higher milage to one that was stored for years. Although a low milage bike is tempting and maybe the better buy you`ll have to invest more to get it back on the road with full service, belts, tires, chain etc. One that`s being ridden and serviced won`t have these expenses.
Generally I think one can say that one should like working on bikes when choosing a Paso. There`s definetely optimisation potential ie on the electrics. If that is taken care off, steering and swingarm bearing greased and some other things you`ll have a nice and reliable bike. You may curse a few times after the first hype of getting a Paso has gone but at the end you`ll love it !

For me I'd go for a Paso every time - the only "ss" series bike I would like is and FE or SL.
If you've had the 900ss I think the 750 will be a little dissapointing.

If you shop well enough you could still get a 907ie for your budget or very close too - it just takes time to come up.

I would always suggest looking for the best bodywork you can find though (in terms of integrity) and I would also suggest you are much better off buying privately to get an understanding of the previous owner.
As has been said above these bikes require a degree of "mechanical sympathy" they are not complicated and are not hard to work on but do require a little bit of a soft touch to them sometimes.

I guess its like riding a two stroke - if you want it to last then you use decent oil, let it wamr up and look after it. If you don't, run it on chain saw oil and cable ties and see what you get at the end of it. :banghead:

I guess what I'm saying is if you can handle the thought of the tire issue and how to solve it/work round it then you're probably going to be fine, if not life might just get a bit too frustrating with a Paso

The engine is the same but the SS is a lighter than the Paso.
So, I guess the SS could be faster than the Paso, but no matter for me.

Paso 750: 73Hp / 7900 RPM Torque: 7.7Kg - meters Weight: 195kg (From Ian Falloons book)
750SS (1991-93): 66Hp / 8500 RPM Torque: 7.2 Kg meters/6500 RPM Weight: 173Kg (From here: http://www.bikez.lt/motorcycles/ducati_750_ss_1993.php)

Paso is heavier, but also little more power :smoke:

I read those Paso details from Ian Falloon's book.

750SS details are from internet.

Here in the world are SAE and DIN horsepowers and sometimes they are from crancshaft/clutch and sometimes they are from rear wheel, so sometimes comparing is little difficult.

Many times those magazines dynoed test bikes, so, then it is often rear wheel Hp.

Greame, (and the rest ofcourse)

I also ride the R1200RT and considered to buy a paso. Instead buying a paso i Bought a 750 SS!
Why? Because of the tire problem and spare parts. Mine 750 SS is tunded to 70 HP to te rear wheel. Its more than enough power to play with, and it ride better than a stock 900SS. I have great fun with riding it an the sound is stunning!

I stil find the looks of the Paso is better.

i didn,t like the two stroke comparison at all  riding and caring for a paso is like looking after a big four stroke twin. in all this discusion no one offers the 906 as an option for grahams consideration and budget. so i will. graham have you considered the paso 906? you may find one within your budget. they have no issues that can not be resolved and in my opinion are great and unique to ride.  :) i certainly love mine.
