I miked out the new clutch discs that I got from the local ducati dealer and guess what??? the new discs are 10 thousands under what the paso manual says is minimum disc thickness (friction discs) the local ducati guys here are working on figuring this all out. the discs I pulled out were 20 thousand under so although its better it still doesnt meet spec. I couldnt find anywhere that said what a new disc should be only what a worn out disc is. Also the local dealer says there was a VIN# break in 1988 for clutch applications. has anyone dealt with mess before? John

did you get an original Paso/Sport clutch set or is it for another Duc model (others had similar problems before) ?

I took the mic home from my work (an aircraft repair facility) and its been calibrated within the last year, We don't have a standard to recheck but it might not be a bad idea to take another one home and cross check it.

without a proper zeroing and a check against a standard or at least a known measurement I'd treat all measurements with a mic or vernier as relative as opposed to absolute. Course that doesn't solve your issue

Well I checked all measurements with a second calibrated mic and they were both exactly the same. I guess I'll see what the local duc guys come up with. they said they would try to find out if any changes were made over the years to the parts that ducati delivered. I'll let everyone know what I find out John

I have to admit I was thinking about that, but wouldn't a friction disc and a steel disc have to be added at the same time. I guess I'm a little worried about experimenting with it. I cant make it down to the ducati dealer until next weekend, (they asked for the old clutch ,new clutch, and VIN # for the bike so they could scratch their heads some more) so it might be a few weeks before that bears any fruit. in the mean time its prime riding time in Arizona. OK I know most of you guys wont feel sorry for me while your shoveling your driveways. thanks for the input (stay tuned) John

You should read this article,it will help you make up your mind
http://hunterdog.org.au/DiscussionBoard ... opic=193.0

you can download a pdf of the complete repair which will help you to see the possibilities in what others have down along these clutch lines.

different clutch packs have different thickness of steel plates. Some are 1.1mm, and others are 1.3mm, and then there is the one thick one that goes at the bottom of the stack that is 1.5mm (if my fading memory serves me correctly). What is important is the overal stack height, how ever you get there. If need be, add one more steel plat to the bottom of the basket. I had to do a lot of swapping on the last Barnett clutch I installed on my ST4s.

I've never really understood why you get a set of steel plates with every pack. The steel plates hardly ever wear out, and only if you have totally smoked a clutch will you ever warp them.

Cheers,
