Hi, has anyone had problems with 2nd gear?

If I select 2nd i get a nasty sound and no power delivered to the wheel. I think that i have lost a tooth and I want to know what to expect when the engine is stripped.

Has this happened to anyone else and if so how was it fixed?

Colin.
p.s. just typical for this to happen now as it is sunny and dry here in Ireland and the roads are beckoning.

I'm no expert on that sort of thing but I'd guess it's more likely a bent shift fork than a problem with the gears... or maybe a screwed up shifter drum (I've forgotten the technical term for it at the moment).

You should even try checking the shift linkage on the outside of the case first. I had a similar problem happen on an older (non-Ducati!) bike after my brother laid it down in a low speed get-off. No real damage to either, but all the sudden I only had 1st and neutral. A quick wrench and a tug on the shifter & linkage and all was right in the world.

Hope it's that simple for you, too ...

I have had: Some years ago, when i put 2 gear on and accelerate very hardly(give throttle grip), there was horrible noise and that 2 gear sprocket "fly away" from its place in axle and hit some times to gear shift fork and take metal away from it. We opened gearbox and noticed, that corners of 2 gear sprocket have grinded and thats why it didnt stay in its place. Those sprockets are PAIRS, so we have to change 2th and 5th sprockets and problems was then solved. I managed to find one paso engine, where was taken out many parts, but luckily tose sprockets were still in and in good condition. Sorry, it was Indiana engine and gear rations changed very little, but nothing dramatical. Worked fine since. Surely that gear change lever(fork) inside left cover MUST BE IN MIDDLE, that gear change function well to up and down !!!

The bloke who is doing the work on the paso says that he drained the oil and bits of gear teeth came out. It looks like a total rebuild or a replacement engine.
I think that the metal in the oil has probably scored the cyclinders and has probably done plenty of other damage so the cheaper option is a replacement engine and i have one in the pipeline.
I will strip the old engine for spares and see what the total damage is.

I hope to get mobile in the next week,

Colin.

If such metal on oil, then surely need to open hole engine to see damages  In my case there came only very small amount of metal to that magnet draining screw, all came from gear change forks, nothing big ones from sprockets! Earlier Ducati sell those gear sprockets separately, but not anymore for many years, so currently have to buy hole gear axle with all sprockets and that is VERY expensive! Better start then search wrecked Paso, or only engine. I pray for You

There is a set of gears from a 750paso for sale on Ebay at the moment. Dealer is based in Belgium... come to think of it the same dealer is selling most of the internals with the exception of the centre crank case that was damaged in a crash... so you could get the parts you need quite cheaply if you're quick

Hi all,
I was incorrect in saying that bits of gear teeth came out in the oil.

The gearbox was split and the only damage was to the dogs, everything was ok so I can rebuild the engine.

I was going to get the ending stripped next winter anyway and then get the bodywork brought back to the way it should be.

I hope to get it on the road soon just in time for the snow to melt,

At least it didn't happen in the summer.

keep it between the hedges,

Colin.
